Mission Statement of the Northwestern Connecticut YMCA
The mission of the YMCA is to build a healthy spirit, mind and body in children and adults through programs that foster caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
Membership and Account Information
Current membership fees are outlined on our website at nwctY.org. The Y accepts credit card, check or cash for membership fees.
Program Memberships: exclusively provide access to paid programming including youth fitness, aquacise, swim lessons and childcare. Program members do not have access to fitness centers, gymnasium or lap/family swim activities.
Facility Membership: provides access to discounted programming and access to full facility privileges. Adult and Senior Facility memberships require an additional monthly pool add-on fee for access to lap swim.
Insurance Reimbursement: Programs such as Silver Sneakers, Renew Active and Silver & Fit provided through Medicare and private insurers. Prospective members must contact their insurance company, verify eligibility and provide their insurance ID number.
Nationwide YMCA Memberships: Nationwide Membership enables you to visit any participating Y in the United States through your active membership at the Northwest CT YMCA.
- Valid for active, full facility YMCA members. Proof of YMCA membership must be provided and will be verified with home branch.
- Nationwide member visits to NWCT Y locations are limited to 8 visits per month
- Program-only participants and special memberships (including Silver Sneakers) are not eligible for Nationwide Membership.
- All current members must have a Y membership card or official ID to enter.
- All members must check-in & scan their membership card at Membership Services upon entry to the facility.
- All past due balances must be paid prior to entry into the facility.
The Y is a membership organization. Therefore, the general public are allowed a maximum purchase of 6 day passes per year. Passes purchased within 30 days of joining may be applied to the joining fee of a new membership.
Those under 18 must be accompanied by a parent who can sign their Youth Day Pass Form and provide a valid photo ID. Those under 13 must be accompanied by a parent throughout their visit.
Financial assistance for Membership and Programs is available to qualifying individuals and families. You may apply online or at the Membership Service Desk of each branch.
- An active membership (Facility-use or Program Membership) is required for participation in most Y programs.
- You may register for open programs at any time. Programs will be drafted on the 1st of the month and are not prorated for those who register in subsequent week that month.
- Register in-person or online at www.nwcty.org
- Monthly Drafted Programs are drafted until you cancel. To cancel, you must submit a completed Program Cancelation Form at least 7 days prior to the 1stof the month. If you do not follow this procedure, the Y will not be held responsible for money drafted- no refunds will be given.
- Program Draft Cancellation forms can be filled out in person at your Y branch or found online on any of our program pages.
- Monthly membership drafts continue until the member notifies the Y they wish to terminate the membership. Membership is not dependent on usage. Member is responsible for making any changes to membership or draft.
- To terminate your Y membership, login to your NWCTY account on our website, click “My Account” in the top right corner, then select Cancel Membershipfrom the “Manage Membership” dropdown menu.
- Membership cancellation forms may also be picked up and submitted at the front desk.
- Both electronic and paper cancellations must be submitted 7 days prior to the end of the next draft date. If you do not follow this procedure, the Y will not be held responsible for money drafted- no refunds will be given.
- Camps are pre-paid by the session. If registration is cancelled before the session, you will receive a 75% refund minus a $10 processing fee. If cancelled after one day of participation, you will receive a 50% refund minus a $10 processing fee. If cancelled after two days, you will receive a 25% refund minus a $10 processing fee. After 3 days of participation, no refund will be granted.
- Life Guarding classes are 2 days in duration. If you cancel prior to the start of the class, you will receive a refund minus a $50 fee. Once the class has begun, no refunds will be given.
- If a program is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment or facility conflict, the participant will receive a credit on their account that will be applied to their next month’s draft. Other cancellations including those related to maintenance disruptions, scheduled holidays or weather-related cancellations will not be refunded.
We are unable to provide make-up classes for days in which participants are unable to attend.
Medical Membership Hold
The Y will place your membership on hold if you are unable to participate due to a medical issue with receipt of documentation from a physician from the time of request forward for one month or more. Contact the Membership Services Supervisor. No memberships will be extended for issues that happened prior to request.
Non-Medical Membership Hold
Once in a 12-month period, members are allowed to put their membership “on-hold” for a period of up to four months, at no additional charge. No On-Hold will be approved for periods of less than one-month. Please complete this form and submit it to our Membership Services team.
All Checks and Credit/Debit Card Drafts returned will be subject to $25 service fee.
Program credits for personal training, private ninja lessons, private swim lessons and other schedulable programs must be redeemed within 12 months of purchase. If credits are not redeemed they will be removed from your account. No refunds will be given.
Due to time restraints and scheduling, 24-hours’ notice must be given to Personal Trainers/Instructors of change/cancellation of appointments. Less than 24-hour’s notice will result in loss of appointment and no refund.
Due to the advances in cellular and video technology, and for the privacy and protection of all of our members, the NWCT YMCA asks that members and participants adhere to the following guidelines:
- Use of electronic devices is NOT permitted, at any time, in Y locker rooms and youth program areas.
- As a courtesy to other members, set phones to silent while working out or use headphones.
- Limit phone conversations to the lobby or non-workout areas and hallways.
- Taking photos or video without permission is not permitted, at any time, on Y premises.

- For this reason, the Northwestern Connecticut YMCA will not discriminate on the basis of gender identity or expression, including the use of bathrooms and locker rooms. YMCA patrons and employees shall have access to the bathroom and locker room corresponding to their gender identity or expression, as per state law. Any employee or patron who has a need or desire for increased privacy, will be provided access to a single stall bathroom, when available.

Lost & Found
The Y assumes no responsibility under any circumstances for lost, left behind or stolen items. This includes items brought to Membership Services. Contact member services to locate Lost and Found.
Locks and Lockers
Day Use Lockers– all persons using locker rooms must provide their own locks. Locks must be removed after each use. Locks will be cut off it left on lockers overnight. The Y is not responsible for lost, left behind or stolen items.
Annual Locker rentals– may be available, please see Member Services for details.
A membership may be suspended at any time for failure to comply with the Y Code of Conduct, specifically:
- Entering and/or allowing someone through any door other than the main entrance will result in a 90 day suspension.
- Failure to comply with staff directions, disrespectful behavior, including use of profanity directed at staff and/or other members will result in:
- 30 day suspension for 1st offense
- 60 day suspension for 2nd offense
- Facility ban for 3rd offense
- Incidents involving more serious cases of threatening, harassment, vandalization or violence will be assessed on an individual basis and may result in a permanent ban from the facility.
Any member under the age of 18 who has their membership suspended will be referred to the Torrington Youth Services Bureau for an in-person meeting. Attendance of this meeting will be required for a reactivation of memberhsip.
Membership fees will continue being withdrawn throughout the suspension period
Codes of Conduct
The Y is a membership organization, which above all values caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. All members must uphold these core values while inside our facility. The following Code of Conduct outlines behaviors which do not support our core values and mission.
- Physical contact with another person in any angry or threatening way
- Harassment or intimidation by words, gestures, body language or any other menacing behavior
- Angry or vulgar language including, swearing, name-calling,
- Carrying or concealing weapons or devices or objects that could be used as weapons
- Use of drugs, alcohol, vapes or tobacco inside the facility
- Any demonstration of sexual activity or contact
- Loitering in program areas including fitness centers, aerobics studio or lobby
- inappropriate attire, removal of shirts or shoes outside of locker rooms and offensive wording on shirts or accessories.
- vandalism, theft, or destruction of property
- Sharing of membership cards between those not on the same membership
- Disrespect or disregard for the instructions of staff
- Entry into or use of unauthorized/unprotected areas of the Y property or facility.
- Including allowing others through any entrance other than the main entrance.
- Being found alone with children met at the Y, displaying grooming behaviors with youth, adults being found in youth locker room with non-family member youth.
- Taking photos or video without permission at any time on Y premises.
All violations of this code of conduct will be reviewed on a case by case basis. Depending on the severity of the violation, a member may receive a suspension or facility ban.
- Parent Supervision: Members under 13 may not be present in the facility without a parent or guardian. Parents of youth participants under 13 are required to remain present during programs such as ninja, swim lessons, youth basketball, soccer, martial arts and others.
- Teen Fitness Center Access: Members under the age of 15 have limited access to the cardio and weight rooms and are permitted in these areas between the hours of 3-5 pm, Monday through Friday.
- Teen Member Suspensions— Any member under the age of 18 who has their membership suspended will have their parents contacted and be referred to the Torrington Youth Services Bureau for an in-person meeting. Attendance of this meeting will be required for a reactivation of membership.
- Youth Code of Conduct: A youth code of conduct will be signed by both parent and member at registration outlining the expectations and values each teen member is expected to uphold.
- Children under the age of 13 years old are not permitted in the fitness center. Children under the age of 16 are only permitted during teen fitness center hours.
- No cell phone conversations in the Fitness Center. Please go out into the hall or lobby.
- Please do not sit on fitness stations and read/text or play games on cell phone.
- Members using the free weight equipment must return weights after use to proper racks.
- Members must wipe down stations when finished.
- Only personal listening devices with headphones are allowed to be worn.
- Shoes or sneakers must be worn at all times.
- Athletic attire must be worn. No jeans or pants with belts in the fitness center.
- Food and drink other than water are prohibited in the fitness center.
- Street shoes are not permitted on the gym floor.
- Proper sportsmanship is expected when engaging in pick-up play.
- No foul or obscene language will be tolerated
- Food or drinks other than water are NOT permitted in the gymnasium.
- A shirt must be worn at all times.
- No roughhousing or trash talk is allowed.
- Have respect for all reserved programs as determined by the gymnasium schedule. Do not delay or disrupt programs. Exit reserved areas as requested by other members and/or staff.
- No hanging on rims or basketball nets.
- Basketballs are not to be passed, bounced or dribbled in any area other than the gymnasium.
1 All swimmers must take a soap & water shower before entering the pool. (CT State Law).
2. Any persons known or suspected of having a communicable disease are prohibited from using the pool. (CT State Law).
3. Spitting, blowing the nose and urinating in the pool are prohibited. (CT State Law).
4. Please refrain from bringing food, gum, beverage (except water), or any glass container into the pool area.
5. Youth 6-17 years of age will be required to perform a swim test administered by the lifeguard on duty. The swim test includes the following:
- Swim from shallow end of the pool as far as the lifeguard chair
- Tread water for 10 seconds
- Float on back
- Return to front and swim back to the shallow end
- If a person does not pass or refuses a swim test, they will be required to remain in the shallow end of the pool.
- All children 6 and under, must wear a life jacket, remain in the shallow end, and have a parent in the water with them within arm’s reach.
- All swimmers under 18 who are NOT accompanied in the water by a parent are required to wear a WAVE drowning prevention headset.
6. Hanging from the lane dividers or ropes is prohibited.
7. Noodles & US Coast Guard approved life jackets can be used during family open swim. Kickboards, bubbles, barbells and all other pool equipment are to be used for instructional classes only.
8. Inflatable flotation devices are not permitted.
9. Proper swim attire is required in the water. Children who are not toilet trained must wear tight fitting rubber or plastic pants over a clean diaper. Traditional disposable diapers are prohibited, however disposable swim diapers are allowed.
10. A qualified lifeguard must be on the pool deck before anyone may enter the pool area. No one, including lifeguards, is to ever swim alone.
11. The dive blocks are to be only used for competition or for swimming lessons. They are not for use by members during open or fitness swim. Diving may only be done in 9 feet of water. Jumping may be done only in the designated coned area of the pool.
12. All injuries occurring on the premises must be reported immediately to the lifeguard or other staff member on duty
All spectators for swim-meets, classes, etc. must stay in assigned areas. Children are not to be left unattended to roam the building. Please refrain from bringing food, gum, beverages (except water), or any glass container into the pool area, gymnasium and fitness center.
- Fire Alarms: All members must evacuate the Y immediately in the event the fire alarm sounds. Swimmers are asked to grab their towels and head to the nearest exit and wait with the lifeguard if there is inclement weather (winter).
- Past Due Balances: Account balances must be paid prior to entering the facility
- Personal Property: The YMCA does not assume responsibility for personal property that is lost, stolen, or damaged.
- Incidents and Injuries: A Y staff person must be informed of all incidents or injuries, so that an incident report can be completed
- Medical Issues: Members should notify the YMCA of any medical problems by completion of a waiver.
- Pets: No animals are permitted on Y property. An exception will be granted for service animals.
- Lost and Found: The Y assumes no responsibility under any circumstances for lost, left behind or stolen items. This includes items brought to Membership Services. Contact member services to locate Lost and Found.
- Electronic Use Guidelines: Use of electronic devices is not permitted at anytime in Y locker rooms and youth program areas. Taking photos or video without permission is not permitted, at any time, on Y premises. Taking photos or video in any youth program area is strictly prohibited.
- Emergency Closings: The Y makes every effort to remain open. However, in the event of inclement weather the Y may close for the safety of our members and staff.
